The first time I tasted this was in college. My roommate used to cook this and we would eat it all the time! Good times! This sopapilla has a very simple flavor. It does not need anything to make it taste good but feels free to pour in your preferred sauce. It is simple, easy, and quick to do. All you need to do is to follow the steps that I have provided and check if you have all the ingredients and you are good to go! You are so in for a treat. I made this today because my best friend/roommate is coming over. I want to serve something personal to both of us. I am so excited to see her. We haven’t seen each other in years! Anyway, feel free to give this recipe your take. If you want to add more ingredients, you are more than welcome to do so. I think dipping it a little in a beaten egg will give extra crunch to these Sopapillas. I hope you love this recipe. Enjoy!
Ingredients:
4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
4 tablespoons shortening
1 ½ cups warm water
2 quarts oil for frying
Directions:
Step 1: Add the flour, baking powder, salt, and shortening in a large mixing bowl. Mix well before pouring in the water.
Step 2: Stir until you have a smooth dough.
Step 3: Allow standing for 20 minutes, covered.
Step 4: On a floured board, roll out until you have a 1/8 to 14-inch think dough. Then, slice into 3-inch squares.
Step 5: In a deep-fryer, heat the oil to about 375 degrees F or 190 degrees C. When the oil is hot, add the Sopapillas and fry both sides until golden brown.
Step 6: Transfer on paper towels to drain.
Step 7: Serve hot. Enjoy!
